Brushing and flossing, seems simple but many get confused as to how often and for how long. Dr. Charchuk, recommends you brush at least twice daily. And encourages you to brush after you eat lunch, if you only brush morning then before bed, you are going at least 12 hrs without cleaning your mouth. Brush for at least two minutes to ensure you are cleaning all teeth. And yes, you have to floss daily! Flossing helps prevent gum disease by getting rid of pieces of food and plaque between your teeth that a toothbrush or mouthwash would be unable to reach. Lastly, use products you like! If you like gel toothpaste, use it! If you prefer the floss sticks, use them! Just be aware that not all products are ADA/CDA approved, for example some mouth washes only freshen breath, they don’t necessarily contain an antibacterial.

On top of proper oral hygiene, you can take charge of a healthy mouth by watching what you eat. Monitor your soda intake, swap it out for water.  It is best to avoid hard sugary candies, not only are they loaded with sugar but they can chip or break a tooth. Sticky foods such as dried fruit is another food to be wary of, they tend to stay on your teeth longer than other foods, causing plaque and eventually cavities. Coffee, wine and tea can lead to discolored teeth if you are not properly brushing or rinsing after consumption. It is best to rinse, chew gum or brush after every meal.

We want to hear about your family, any recent trips, new grandchildren, engagements, all the good stuff life brings. But above all, we want to make certain your teeth and gums are at their optimal. It’s imperative that any issues are caught early and we are able to treat them immediately.

When you do not regularly take good care of you teeth and mouth, you could experience these problems:

Cavities- Cavities are caused by tooth decay. Your teeth can decay when you do not brush and floss them regularly to get leftover food off of them. If left untreated, cavities can tooth pain, can cause your tooth to become infected, and can even lead to tooth loss.

Gum disease-  Plaque on your teeth can lead to gum disease. Gum disease is an infection of the tissue that supports your teeth. It can cause teeth to become loose over time. There is also evidence that gum disease is related to heart disease.

Oral cancer- Smoking, chewing tobacco, and alcohol can increase your risk for oral cancer. Poor oral hygiene alone may not increase your risk for oral cancer. When you combine it with any other risk factor, though, it dramatically boosts your chances of getting cancer.

Poor self-esteem-  When your teeth aren’t clean, you have bad breath. Bad breath can make you feel uncomfortable at work, school, and in social situations. This can make you reluctant to participate. Longtime poor oral health can result in tooth loss, which can make you smile less. All of these things can damage your self-esteem, or how you see yourself.
