Good Hygiene Starts at Home
Brushing and flossing, seems simple but many get confused as to how often and for how long. Dr. Charchuk, recommends you brush at least twice daily. And encourages you to brush after you eat lunch, if you only brush morning then before bed, you are going at least 12 hrs without cleaning your mouth. Brush for at least two minutes to ensure you are cleaning all teeth. And yes, you have to floss daily! Flossing helps prevent gum disease by getting rid of pieces of food and plaque between your teeth that a toothbrush or mouthwash would be unable to reach. Lastly, use products you like! If you like gel toothpaste, use it! If you prefer the floss sticks, use them! Just be aware that not all products are ADA/CDA approved, for example some mouth washes only freshen breath, they don’t necessarily contain an antibacterial.
On top of proper oral hygiene, you can take charge of a healthy mouth by watching what you eat. Monitor your soda intake, swap it out for water. It is best to avoid hard sugary candies, not only are they loaded with sugar but they can chip or break a tooth. Sticky foods such as dried fruit is another food to be wary of, they tend to stay on your teeth longer than other foods, causing plaque and eventually cavities. Coffee, wine and tea can lead to discolored teeth if you are not properly brushing or rinsing after consumption. It is best to rinse, chew gum or brush after every meal.

Poor self-esteem- When your teeth aren’t clean, you have bad breath. Bad breath can make you feel uncomfortable at work, school, and in social situations. This can make you reluctant to participate. Longtime poor oral health can result in tooth loss, which can make you smile less. All of these things can damage your self-esteem, or how you see yourself.
