The Primary Methods Utilized Within Sedation Dentistry Practices

One of the most feared medical professionals are dentists. It is fairly odd that people, even adults, find themselves fearing someone whose main priority is to help them maintain a perfect smile. Due to this fear of these individuals, sedation dentistry was developed.

Dental sedation is nothing new. In fact, dentists have been using various agents to help their patients relax for an elongated frame of time. There are some facts that highlight that this method has been being used since the beginning of the dentistry profession. However, in those days, alcohol was usually the main chemical given to patients at the time.

Sedation dentists are able to administer varying amounts of sedatives to patients that require them. The sedatives range from mild to deep. The mild sedatives will enable a patient to relax, while still being in a state where they are awake. However, the deep sedatives will make a patient fall asleep, so the dentist can perform whatever work he needs to, on the patient, without being interrupted during the process.

Speaking with your dentist, will prepare you for the procedure. Prior to being put under any type of chemical while the procedure is being rendered, the dentist performing the procedure will need to have access to your medical history. They will also need to be made aware of any substances that you may be using as well.

Dentists will use three different methods, commonly. These three methods are designed to create the same results, but they do so in differing ways. The methods are anxiolysis, along with mild sedating, and sedating intravenously. Although designed for the same purpose, there are a few things that make these methods different from one another.

The term anxiolysis may frighten some people to hear. However, this is the most common sedating form that dentists have been using for a long frame of time. This is a mild means of sedating. The patient will have a mask placed around their nose and mouth, and gas will be delivered to them. The gas given is what many people refer to as laughing gas.

Oral medications are used when a dentist makes the decision to put a patient underneath a form of moderate to mild sedating. Typically, this method is a little bit more severe than anxiolysis. The patient will be instructed to consume the medication prior to coming to the office. They will then drive to their location, giving the medication time to take effect.

Intravenous sedation dentistry is the most evasive way to make a patient relax during the procedure. A dentist will inject the patient with a sedative that will put them to sleep. The sedative will continue to be delivered to the patient, while their procedure is being conducted, ensuring that they remain asleep during the entire thing. This method is commonly used when a patient has a short procedure that they need to be still and relaxed for.
