Pregnancy – Why Keeping Your Regular Visits With the Dentist is Important

So you are expecting a child, congratulations from our South Calgary Dental Team! There is a lot going on in your life right now and we are sure worrying about going to see your dentist is not high on the priority list. But the impact your oral health has on the rest of your body will in turn have a major influence on the health of your baby. Your dentist should be an active part of your health care team leading up to the delivery of your child.

Is it Safe to Visit My Dentist While Pregnant?

The benefits of receiving dental care during pregnancy far outweigh potential risks. It is best to hold off on elective procedures until after your child’s birth, like teeth whitening but if you are in need of treatment such as filings or freezing, these are harmless and safe to carry out while pregnant.

At your first appointment while expecting it is important you let your dentist know you are pregnant. While routine dental treatments are usually safe during pregnancy, some procedures should be avoided in the first 3 months (first trimester). Your dentist may put off taking x-rays until after the birth of your baby. However if they are unavoidable, precautions can be made to ensure your baby’s safety.

Not only is it safe to visit your dentist but crucial as pregnancy can take a toll on your oral health. Pregnancy does not automatically damage your teeth, however, the demands of pregnancy can lead to particular dental problems in some women.

Common causes of dental problems during pregnancy can include-

  • Gum problems
  • Vomiting
  • Craving sugary foods
  • Retching while brushing teeth

Gum Problems

During pregnancy the gum problems that occur are not due to increased plaque but a worse response to plaque as a result of increased hormone levels.

Some of these gum problems include

  • Gingivitis – swelling or bleeding of the gums while brushing or bleeding
  • Undiagnosed or untreated periodontal disease- pregnancy can worsen this gum infection which is the result of untreated gingivitis
  • Pregnancy Epulis- a localized enlargement of the gum that can bleed easily

Vomiting During Pregnancy

The vomiting associated with morning sickness can coat your teeth with strong stomach acids. Repeated reflux and vomiting can damage tooth enamel and increase the risk of tooth decay. Most women are eager to brush their teeth after vomiting but with your teeth coated in stomach acids the enamel is softened and vigorous brushing will scratch the tooth enamel.

It is suggested you rinse your mouth thoroughly with tap water, followed by fluoridated mouthwash. After an hour has passed it is safely to brush your teeth.

Retching While Brushing

Some women find that brushing their teeth while pregnant causes them to retch. However, you risk tooth decay if you do not brush regularly A couple things to try to help with retching are

  • Using a toothbrush made for a toddler as the head is smaller
  • Slow down your brushing action
  • Try another brand of toothpaste. If this is not effective use only water and follow up with fluoridated mouthwash. Returning to toothpaste as soon as you are able

Food Cravings

With pregnancy comes unusual food cravings and many high in sugar, putting you at higher risk of tooth decay. If you are unable to keep away from the sugary foods try a healthier option like fruit. And always rinse your mouth or brush your teeth after snacking.

Being diligent with your daily brushing routine is especially vital during these next 9 months. Be sure to brush at least twice daily and floss regularly.
