Keeping Your Mouth Healthy – With Mouthwash?
There are many ways to ensure a healthy mouth. Brushing at least twice daily, flossing, watching what you eat and regular check ups are among the top noted habits. But is mouthwash on this list of must do’s?
It’s a great feeling having just swished around peppermint in your mouth, that feeling of clean and refreshment. Along with brushing and flossing, using mouthwash DOES improve your oral health! Our Chinook Mall Family Dental Clinic team put together the guidelines in using mouthwash to benefit your teeth and most importantly your gums.
- Do not use it to replace brushing or flossing
- Do use a mouthwash that is alcohol free
- Do follow the directions
- Do not rely on it as a breath freshener
- Do rinse, gurgle and spit
- Do talk to your dentist if your mouth has sensitivity to mouthwash
- Do use moderately
- Do not eat or drink for 30 minutes after using a fluoride mouthwash
What Does Mouthwash Do For Me
The powerful liquid actually benefits overall oral health and is a critical part of daily hygiene! The dozen or so species of bacteria that cause gum disease interact with gum tissue, causing inflammation, which can break down gum tissue as well as the bone that holds teeth in place. Brushing and flossing is the best way to remove plaque, but the antibacterial ingredients in mouthwash do have a modest effect. But, before you rinse, be sure you’re using the right wash for the best results. When you shop for a mouthwash look for products that don’t feature alcohol and are instead formulated with xylitol, which prevents bacteria from metabolizing.
Mouthwash clearly offers certain benefits — but it’s important to know that not all mouth rinses are the same. Saltwater rinses can be made at home with warm water and salt, whereas store-bought types contain a variety of ingredients ranging from fluoride (Act) to alcohol (Listerine) to chlorhexidine (Peridex).
