Take the time to get your mouth in check! Having a healthy mouth leads to a better quality of life. Stop ignoring that aching tooth, bleeding gums or sore jaw. Be proactive in keeping your mouth happy and remember it is a part of your body. Your oral health does indeed affect your body’s well-being.

At our Chinook Mall dental office we believe in our knowledge and skill in practicing general dentistry. The overall treatment of your teeth and gums is vital and benefits you the patient in numerous ways. A few of these include:

Cavities – The Importance of Early Detection

Cavities are formed from tooth decay that wears through the outer layer of your tooth (enamel). Once the decay reaches the softer inner layer it creates holes that are known as cavities. If left without treatment, a cavity can begin to spread and infect other parts of your inner tooth – such as the nerve. If the infection is able to progress it becomes more difficult to save the tooth and more invasive procedures are needed.

Gum Disease – Prevention is Key

The term gum disease describes bacterial growth and factors that gradually destroy the tissue surrounding and supporting the teeth. Gum disease begins when plaque adheres at and below the visible edge of your gums. If plaque is not removed by daily brushing and flossing it hardens into tartar. Your dental cleanings involve having plaque and tartar removed, that is why your twice yearly cleanings are so important. They can help prevent gum disease and, in most cases, reverse the early stage.

X-Rays – Exposing and Detecting

Through the careful use of x-rays dentists are able to detect dental decay, bone irregularities, root pathologies, periodontal disease and countless other issues. Early detection of these problems allow for intervention and correction before they become more serious. Routine dental x-rays are taken based on age, risk of disease and presence or symptoms of disease. How often you get them depends on your medical history and current condition. Some people may need them as often as every six months while others who visit their dentist on a regular basis may need them only every couple of years.
