When Should My Child First See a Dentist?
This question is easily answered. Your child should have their first check up around their first birthday or within 6 months of their first tooth’s arrival. First birthday, first check up! Dr. Charchuk believes your child’s first visit should not be after they have fallen and hit their mouth on the pavement or furniture, as they will naturally associate pain and discomfort with the dentist. Their first experience should be enjoyable, even fun and a learning experience. The goal is to get them in before there is a problem.
Tips For a Good First Experience
- Take your child with you so they see what goes on in a dental office
- Talk about how routine check ups help keep your mouth happy and healthy
- Make the appointment earlier in the day so your child is not tired
- Arrive early so your child can become comfortable in the new surroundings
- Instead of bribing, be positive about dental visits, highlight the new and interesting aspects of visiting the dental clinic
- Inform your child you have made the dentist appointment so it can be talked about calmly and any questions answered leading up to the appointment
- Play dentist! Kids learn from play so teach them to open their mouth wide and make sure to give them a turn to be the dentist
What Happens at the First Visit
You can expect it to be short and informal. Your child’s teeth will be checked for decay and an inspection of the gums, jaw and bite. A healthy mouth starts with a routine set in place at home. Good oral hygiene habits will be walked through and you will be given a chance to ask any questions regarding your little one’s teeth and teething. Most younger patients will be recommended to see their dentist every 6 months to ensure the best oral health.
Baby teeth are not around for too long but they serve an important purpose in holding a space for permanent teeth that are growing underneath the gums. They also help your child chew their food and speak quickly and clearly. They are just as prone to cavities as adult teeth are so it’s essential to keep careful watch on their growth and integrity.
